Salty microbe may be world’s oldest – Boing Boing.

My favorite leisure-time blog, Boing Boing, sometimes has very cool biology stuff in it.  This one is neat, bearing in mind that yours truly, along with our colleagues who work with us at Cuatro Cienegas, has published a claim that perhaps the endemic microbes at Cuatro Cienegas, with their very strong marine affiliations, may actually be “hatching” from the Jurassic-era limestones that were laid down many millions of years ago.

It seemed a bit crazy at the time when we wrote that paper, but heck, these guys seem to be claiming to have found viable microbes in 250 million year old rocks.  The Jurassic was only 175 million years ago.

Here’s our PNAS paper link.
