The Ribosome wins the Nobel Prize!

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2009 – Press Release.

Congratulations to the ribosome, my all-time favorite organelle, for finally receiving its rightful recognition.  (I know, some actual PEOPLE got the prize, but only because they worked on such a cool thing.)ribosome

I remember when these guys published the molecular structure of the ribosome in Science in 200o (Ban, N., Nissen, P., Hansen, J., Moore, P.B., and Steitz, T.A. (2000). The complete atomic structure of the large ribosomal subunit at 2.4 A resolution. Science 289, 905-920.)  It was during our big IRCEB RNA project and it was very exciting to see.

Of course, now we know the REAL reason that the ribosome is so important:  it’s where most of the P in most organisms is located!
