The Distinction Between “Which” and “That”

The Distinction Between “Which” and “That”.

Posted by Jim:

I know that various of the students in the lab are writing papers and proposals right now.  I know this because I am heavily buried in editing.  Here’s an excellent explanation of when to use “that” and when to use “which”.  This is something I’ve always struggled with myself over the years.  And these days I’ve had trouble explaining to my coauthors, etc,  why I am crossing out “which” and replacing with “that” (or vice versa).

I hope this makes sense to folks.
